Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with the church family of Whitfield Christian Today.
  • From this morning's teaching; Marks of maturity, a mature Christian sees the value of joyful relationships, a mature Christian sees blessings in burdens and the mature Christian sees a life is worth living through Christ.
  • Question, are you you growing up in the Lord or are you growing old in the Lord. Growing old in the Lord takes very little effort and a whole lot of time. Growing up in the Lord takes discipline which leads to maturity.
  • BTW we sang my favorite hymn today, Holy, Holy, Holy - this hymn never gets old, if you have forgotten the lyrics here they are once again.
  • Special treat this past Friday, attended the candlelight processional at Epcot. Guest narrator; Amy Grant. The choir's did a wonderful job, and Amy Grant's comments were very moving.
  • It is about time to pack up the Christmas decorations, the house sure will seem empty.
  • The online edition of USA Today carried an article last week entitled "passages" listing all the celebrities who have passed along in 2012. Life truly is a vapor.
  • Christmas break is almost over, time to get back to work, I have enjoyed the break!
  • 2013! it seems like yesterday we were talking about Y2K!
  • A church where I served as youth minister had their last service today. I am sure the service was bittersweet. I am so thankful they took a chance on me almost 29 years ago and allowed me to cut my teeth in youth ministry with their kids.  What were they thinking?
  • Something to Chew on; “When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not yet ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. A week is more than enough time for us to decide whether or not to accept our destiny.” ~ Paulo Coelho

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with the church family at Starrett Road Christian Church in Jacksonville this morning.
  • Carols and Scripture filled the time of worship today, very nice.
  • Besides Jesus, have you considered the gift God gives to us each Christmas? Jesus offers you forgiveness for your past, peace of mind in the present, and a solid future in eternity. These are gifts that need not be returned, for one size fits all!
  • Gotta say, I love preaching on "Christmas Sunday"
  • Let's remember, not everyone is going to have a Merry Christmas this year; keep your eyes open for opportunities to make a difference in the likes of others.
  • Christmas break begins tomorrow, so looking forward to a change of pace.
  • College Bowl games start this week. yes, it is the most wonderful time of the year!
  • Something to Chew on Christmas Edition; Santa's got to love how much easier Facebook has made his job. After a few posts even I can tell who's naughty or nice. ~ Great Quote from Rick Atchley's Twitter Feed

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with the church family at the Christian Church of Deleon Springs today.
  • Amazingly friendly people.
  • Several talented musicians brought variety to the worship; hymns, carols and modern songs really made the worship special.
  • Today's topic; you cannot always have a "White Christmas", however it is possible to have a "Right Christmas".
  • Key thoughts from the morning message; The miracle of Christmas is not on 34th street; it is in Bethlehem. Through Jesus, God offers you a relationship that provides forgiveness for your past, peace of mind in the present, and a solid future in eternity.
  • Had lunch with some long time friends - notice I did not say "old", so good to spend the afternoon with them.
  • Friday's tragedy was once again a vivid reminder the world needs Jesus.
  • Remember; If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent an educator.
If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent a scientist.
If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent an economist.
If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer. But our greatest need was forgiveness, so He sent us a Savior.
  • I have had the occasion to read a few thoughts on leadership lately and two thoughts come to mind; REAL LEADERSHIP is always proactive and it is the role of a leader is to define reality.
  • This blog post is a reminder of how tough the located ministry is today, have you prayed for your pastor today?
  • This blog post is a reminder Godly wisdom always brings hope, thanks Bob.
  • Something to Chew on; Tonight President Obama quoted these words from scripture; Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but what is unseen, for what is seen is temporary, what is unseen is eternal.”  (2 Cor. 4:16-18)  I wonder how many people heard these words for the first time and realized there is a hope beyond this life!

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...

  • Returned to Okeechobee Christian Church today, completed a two part series, Christmas through the Eyes of Angels.
  • Today's focus ~ Mary
  • Mary did not have all the details regarding how her baby would bring salvation, however she was willing to walk by faith and not by sight.
  • May we take on the attribute of Mary, and may we walk by faith and not by sight.
  • The longer I am out of the located ministry, the greater my appreciation grows for ministers who preach every Sunday.
  • Met a 93 year old missionary today; asked him  about retirement and he told me the word retirement is not in the Bible; he will retire when he gets to heaven. Humbled!
  • We talked about the church in America today as well as what is happening in the church abroad, amazed at his knowledge.
  • My son and daughter-in-law dedicated our granddaughter to the Lord today - so proud of them.
  • This week is finals at FCC, let the day of accountability come; YIKES!
  • I miss college football!
  • A member of my former youth group had some difficulty this week, but it looks like things are going to turn out better than expected. The power of prayer was very evident.
  • Leaders understand when to rally the troops and when to retreat. Too often we retreat when we should rally!
  • Something to Chew on; Humility is not about thinking less of yourself, it is about thinking of yourself less! ~ Dave Stone

Thinking about youth ministry

I have the privilege of meeting with a group of youth ministers once a month for a time of encouragement, planning and praying. I really look forward to meeting with this group of young men. Youth ministers have a special place in my heart because of my own background in youth ministry.  I served as a youth minister for 17 years and taught youth ministry at Florida Christian College for 7 years. Now 15 years removed from youth ministry I find I have a real appreciation for the work these young men are doing in their ministries. I believe they are on the front line of changing our culture. However, the challenges they face as a youth/student pastor today are enormous. Limited resources, secular thinking and the demands of today's teens and their parents make student ministry more difficult than when I was serving as a youth minister.
  • Today, if you are a youth minister, I say thank you, thank you for your time, dedication and effort to see teens reached for Christ. Youth ministry is ever changing, the next time you think about giving it up and bailing out remember these words from the apostle Paul.
  • If you are the spouse of a youth minister, you have what I believe is toughest role there is in ministry today. The ever changing youth culture requires flexibility and balance. As the spouse of a youth pastor, you see what your mate is going through to reach teens; the sacrifices, time commitment and efforts are not going unnoticed.
  • If you are a church leader, pray for your youth minister, come along side of them and let them know you are supporting them, even when you do not understand some of reasoning behind what they are doing to reach teens.
I am grateful for the men and women who choose to stay in this endeavor. Youth /student pastors remind all of us the church will live beyond us as they reach the next generation for Christ.

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped at Okeechobee Christian Church today very friendly folks.
  • Today's sermon; Joseph and his part in the Christmas Narrative.
  • Key point from this morning, Joseph displayed grace in a world governed by law.
  • Will you display grace this Christmas season?
  • Joseph's life could be summed up in one phrase; Faithful Obedience when you do not understand God's plan.
  • We should all emulate the obedience of Joseph when comes to following God's plan.
  • I love singing Christmas Carols.
  • Friday night was the best Night of Noel I have attended at Florida Christian College.
  • This weekend has been a weekend where I have reflected on the goodness of God.
  • As I watched the SEC championship game I wondered what would happen if the church had the same tenacity as the Tide and Bulldogs had on Saturday?
  • Making tough decisions is not the mark of leadership, living with the tough decision is the true mark of leadership.
  • Something to Chew on; He who has not Christmas in heart, will never find it under a tree. ~ Roy L. Smith

Can I have your attention please!

Recently I was traveling from Kissimmee Florida to Indianapolis Indiana to attend the International Conference on Missions. As I traveled up Interstate 75, I was amazed at the number of billboards along the highway, as well as the vast array of messages on the advertisements. In Florida I was constantly reminded of the "World Famous Ron Jon's Surf Shop"  and there were cheap Disney tickets to be had if I would stop in and take a tour of some resort along the way. In Georgia I was invited to try pecans & sweet vidalia onions and to stop at "King Frog", In Tennessee I was told I had to see Rock City, Lookout Mountain and the Chattanooga Choo-Choo. Kentucky reminded me to stop in Cave City and see Mammoth Caves and the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. There was also an abundance of signs that read; Strippers; need we say more" (I had to wonder what young parents were thinking about as they saw the "stripper" signs - and if their children in the back seats of the SUV's wanted to know about the strippers).

Now regardless of the messages, each sign had one thing in common; they were trying to get my attention. Some messages were inviting, some were provocative, but they were all trying to get my attention as I traveled along the way.

Everyday we are bombarded with messages trying to get our attention, Buy this, you need this, we will help you with this or that - everyone is telling us we need to have their product or service. Over the next few weeks merchants will be trying to get our attention as they offer sales, rebates and perks all to entice each of us to buy that special gift.

Two thousand years ago, God was trying to get our attention as well, but He did not use billboards or products or services. Instead God simply sent his son to an obscure town known as Bethlehem. For the last 2,000 years He has been calling us back to Him through His son. Unfortunately like the billboards along the interstate other things are trying to get our attention as well. As we celebrate the Christmas season let us remember while there are many things that will scream for our attention this year, only one thing deserves our attention this Christmas season; Jesus Christ.

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped at FCC Kissimmee today and though there were many glitches in the tech area, it was an incredibly powerful message and time of worship. Just goes to show you where the real power is when it comes to worship.
  • Want to see how to react to peer pressure, check out Daniel 3
  •  FCC Kissimmee is using a unique way to meet the benevolence needs of the community as well as give additional monies to missions giving. The $1 method could be used by many churches to enhance their benevolence ministry.
  • It really is time to stop cursing the darkness and begin lighting candles!
  • Had a great time at my dad's birthday party yesterday. I have such an amazing family! I love when we gather together for celebrations, there is always good food, but more than that the time we share together is precious.
  • Big salute to our veterans today; many members of my family have served in the military, I am so proud of them!
  • Wrapped up the Financial Peace University class this past week, this is my second time through; amazing how a refresher course can give you a renewed perspective.

  • Preached at First Christian Church of Orange Park today, gotta say this is a real friendly church.
  • Filled in for one of our alums this morning, judging from the attitudes this morning, I believe Jim is gong to have a great ministry at FCCOP.
  • This morning's topic; Can The Book Be Trusted? Short answer - YES!
  • Favorite quote from the message this morning; The Bible is not a human book about God, the Bible is God's book about his relationship with humans.
  • Really enjoyed the worship this morning, Chris is doing a great job with his worship team.
  • I am going to be a grandfather soon.
  • Roundup was a great success this past Saturday, we surpassed our goal of $100,000; the day's total; $103,000.

  • Fall Festival at the church was great as well, spent the whole time reconnecting with old friends so thankful for ministry friendships.

  • I am really impressed with the freshman class at FCC this year!
  • I believe the reason some churches move forward is because they understand the secret of trusting God.

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with the church family of Brooksville Christian this morning, This church is doing some great things on the west coast of Florida.
  • Really enjoyed their time of worship and communion this morning.
  • Someone has taught Brooksville Christian to be excellent greeters, and it really worked.
  • I wonder if people really understand how important a first impression truly is to new people visiting our churches; Brooksville Christian understands and it shows.
  • Can we really be in the 7th week of the college football season?
  • Saw an example of leadership by force this week, this never works! Remember elders are called to be shepherds, not managers.
  • Here is a question I have been pondering, how does changing a church's name position a church for growth? Just wondering.
  • Every time I hear of a minister's family facing divorce I am brokenhearted.
  • I came upon this old blog post this week, made me smile.
  • I have to admit I am a little jealous of the "Fall" Pictures my friends are posting on FACEBOOK. But then I remember, winter is coming!
  • I posted last week I was having dinner with some dear friends on Tuesday evening, it was a great night and I am truly blessed to have this family in my life!
  • I am looking forward to Thanksgiving!

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with the church family of FCC Titusville this morning, great time of worship!
  • I was able to preach on the topic; "There is a little bit of Jonah in all of us". Like Jonah, there is always a reluctance until we commit ourselves to God's plans.
  • There are basically two Jonah's in the book of Jonah; Jonah 1.0 the one who ran and Jonah 2.0, the one that did what God asked him to do.
  • Question; Which Jonah are you; 1.0 or 2.0?
  • I also did something I have not done in 20 years, teach a Jr. High Bible School Class, let me just say things have changed.
  • FCC Titusville held a missions emphasis this weekend. It was obvious, FCC Titusville believes in missions.
  • The church has several people who have grown up in the church and are now serving somewhere in the world.
  • At a time when churches are considering cutting their missions ministry here is a church who understands "it is not all about us."
  • If you live in Florida, you might notice that God is lowering the thermostat around here a little bit, it is beginning to get a nicer in this area.
  • Six weeks down and the college football season is really getting interesting.
  • Will wonders ever cease, my mom got an iPhone this week - WOW!
  • Some good friends of mine have been in California this past week, looks like they have had a wonderful time.
  • The Fall TV season is upon us, I cannot believe some people are paid to produce some of the shows being offered this year.
  • This past week's debate should be a reminder to all  leaders; you just cannot mail it in!
  • Dinner plans this week include having a dinner with some friends I first met in 1984, I cannot wait to reconnect.
  • Sometimes I am surprised by opportunities God lays before me. It does make this ministry really exciting!
  • Something to Chew on; Any church that is not seriously involved in helping fulfill the great commission, has forfeited its Biblical right to exist ~ Oswald J. Smith (Ouch - now that one hurt!)

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...

  • The preaching tour continues as I preached at Silver Star Christian Church today. Small church with a big heart.
  • The College travel team, Voices of Praise was with me as well, I really appreciate the hard work these students put in representing the college.
  • The people of Silver Star had a great lunch prepared for us, what a great spread!
  • Our leadership conference at FCC was a great success. Gary York is a gifted communicator as well as a great strategic thinker. I can see many churches benefiting from his wisdom this weekend.
  • The big takeaways for me regarding the conference; Biblical Leadership is important, Intentional and intense, it is not for the faint of heart.
  • Question, if you are not willing to see Biblical Leadership as important, intense and intentional; why are you serving on your church's leadership team?
  • How can 4 weeks of college football go by so quickly?
  • Something to Chew on; What remains in your life will largely be determined by what you celebrate and tolerate. ~ Steve Furtick

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with church family at Port Orange Christian Church today! This is a church that doing some great things for the Kingdom.
  • Preached 3 times, once on Saturday evening and twice on Sunday - I thought I would be tired, but I was energized by the day.
  • The church had 6 additions this week. That was exciting.
  • Worship team did an excellent job today, Sherry and her team did a wonderful job leading people in worship.
  • What was really thrilling today was to know the pastoral staff are all alums from  FCC and they are all doing a great job, Matt you are doing a great job assembling a team!
  • I cannot say enough about the Port Orange CC Missions Team, their generosity is incredible.
  • This weekend is our Elder's Leaders Conference at FCC, Looking forward to challenging messages as well as practical suggestions on how develop leaders for the churches in Florida.
  • After traveling for FCC for 18 months I am able to make the following observation; Healthy churches are led by ministers and elders who have a healthy relationship. You can survive a poor location, limited resources and poor facilities, but you cannot thrive if the church does not have a healthy relationship between the minister and the elders.
  • Did you notice how Rocky Top was not played much in the 4th Quarter of Saturday evening's game?
  • 1/5 of the semester is over at FCC, I hope the students are aware of how fast a semester can go by!
  • Watching Dolphins/Raiders game today, I hope the Dolphins are not giving us false hope.
  • Something to Chew on; You do not need to solve everyone's problems, but we all need to bear one another's burdens. ~ Mark Batterson

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with the church family at Sebring Christian Church this morning.
  • Preached on the topic, The Trustworthiness of the Bible.
  • We looked at the Source, the Purpose and the Message of the Bible this morning.
  • I was also able to share the impact of FCC through the lives of some of our alumni during Bible School.
  • When you think about it, it really is amazing to think what God did with $3,000 and a group of committed men and women as they started a Bible College in Central Florida in 1975.
  • Great blend of worship this morning, some new stuff, some old stuff and it was all good stuff!
  • Why can't the church generate a buzz about eternal life, like Apple is doing with their big announcement on Wednesday?
  • This weekend my parents celebrated 55 years of marriage, in an age where the sacredness of marriage is questioned, I am so proud of the example my parents have set for our family.
  • How many people look into the rear mirror of regret, when we should be looking through the windshield for opportunity!
  • Words that have me thinking this week; accountability, preparation and challenges.
  • Tomorrow evening I am preaching at a men's meeting in Polk County, really looking forward to sharing with this group.
  • Football is back!
  • Something to Chew on; Leaders must identify not only the correct answer, but the correct question and context, Attitude is so important. ~ Steve Furtick.

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with the fine folks of Whitfield Christian this morning, this is a church in transition and I believe in the next few years we are going to hear some good things out of Sarasota because of this church.
  • This morning's message; Can the Bible be trusted?
  • Favorite quote from this morning's message; The Bible teaches us what is right, what is not right, how to get right and how to stay right!
  • First week of classes at FCC is in the books, interesting conversations around the dining room table at our house!
  • Have you seen the price of textbooks lately?

  • I had forgotten how much I enjoyed College Game Day on ESPN.

  • I still believe the greatest challenge facing the church today is lack of leadership.
  • OK I admit it, I do miss the Fall season up north, however January in Florida is heaven!
  • Some dear friends are visiting in October; I can't wait!
  • Something to Chew on; If you think what you did yesterday was great, then you have not done much today ~ Lou Holtz

When God places His hand on you!

Part of today's Bible reading from the "One Year Bible" was from Ezra 7. In the reading there is phrase used 3 times regarding the man Ezra; the gracious hand of his God was on him (Ezra). Now one of the things I have noticed in studying scripture; if God repeats something it must be important. Here we find this "gracious" phrase mentioned 3 times in 28 verses. Scripture is full of examples of men and women who experienced the hand of God upon them from time to time. Often times God placed his hand upon people because He had a  special task for them to accomplish or because they had a unique skill that would be beneficial to His purpose. When God placed his hand on Ezra it was not because of a special skill or a special moment in Israel's history. Verse 10 gives us the reason why God chose to place His hand on Ezra; This was because Ezra had determined to study and obey the Law of the LORD and to teach those decrees and regulations to the people of Israel. The reason why God chose to place His hand on Ezra was two-fold; Ezra was determined to study the word of God and he was willing to teach the decrees of God to the people of Israel. No special skill, no crisis of the moment, just a determination to study the word of God and and a desire to share the word with others. Ezra understood it was not enough to simply learn the word, Ezra knew the word of God must be taught to others. Ezra's determination and desire made him the worthy candidate to have God's hand placed upon him.

This morning, I sat in the Florida Christian College Convocation Service and listened to our President share the importance of being in the word of God to the student body. He then went on to challenge them to make sure they get the word out as well. As I sat there listening to him, I could not help but wonder how the student body of FCC will have numerous opportunities to get the word out in the years to come. Some will become preachers, missionaries, youth ministers and other vocational ministers; every week they will study, prepare and present the word of God and God's hand will be on each one of them as they get the word out. There was another group in the audience today, they will not go in to full-time vocational ministry, however, they too will have the opportunity to get the word out through their career choices as well. FCC has a simple motto; Strong in the Scriptures. We understand the importance scripture has in every area of our life. Scripture is foundational to our life. We also understand it is not enough to make scripture a part of our life we must teach the message of scripture as well. If we do, then like Ezra, we will find God's gracious hand upon us as well.

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Great worship and message this morning at FCC Kissimmee.
  • Are you a fan or a follower of Jesus Christ? To find out you must first define the relationship you have with him.
  • Someone has said the church today does a great job with Meet, Eat and Retreat, but is  that all what Christ wants for his followers?
  • Great question to ponder in light of this morning's message; note Peter's response.
  • Couple of firsts in our life this week, 1. All of our children have moved out of the house. 2. We have two children in college at the same time.
  • Looking forward to being in Sarasota next weekend.
  • I attended my first soccer game last night, and I must say, I am impressed with the stamina needed to play soccer.
  • Based on preseason, it is going to be tough to be a Dolphin fan this year.
  • Leadership reveals itself in a variety of ways, however lack of leadership always reveals itself in mediocrity.
  • I love the worship song 10,000 Reasons
  • Received a letter from a good friend this week, really appreciated the encouragement.
  • The Lance Armstrong incident is disturbing on many levels.
  • As I watched the reports on the passing of astronaut Neil Armstrong, I was struck by his humility.
  • Something to Chew On; You can't change you, you cannot change others, you cannot change the world, Change is God's Work. ~ Jon Weece

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with the church family at Union Park Christian Church today.
  • Great message on a difficult topic  - Discipline, thanks Tom!
  • The lack of disciple will hamper every area of life.
  • The world wants us to forgo discipline for the sake of freedom, however true freedom comes from a life of discipline.
  • Why do we believe we can achieve something without discipline?
  • Discipline + Opportunity = Amazing Achievement
  • One of our kids has moved back to college on Friday; the other will move out on Wednesday, house is getting a little more empty.

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Youth Sunday at FCC Kissimmee today. After watching this group of teens, all I can say is the future is bright for this church.
  • Chris did a wonderful job preaching on the word "Captivated".
  • Question what captivates you today?
  • Read this section of scripture and if you are not captivated by God you should adjust your priorities.
  • While the victories of the Olympics have been inspiring, the defeats by the favorites are heartbreaking!
  • Are you a part of a praying church or a playing church - it really does make a difference which one you belong to today.
  • Lack of leadership continues to plague many organizations today.
  • In ministry the call will always pull one toward the prize.
  • Some friends are taking their daughter to college this week in Tennessee - I feel their pain!
  • John Ortberg has a new book out this week, I know what I will be reading.
  • Something to Chew on; If you do not set boundaries someone will set them for you. ~ Bethany Jett on Twitter

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with the Ocala Christian Church family today. This new church is doing some great things in Ocala. Hats off to Roger and his team.
  • Worship was great, we did a song from 1996 and it was called an older song! Great job Butch.
  • Ocala Christian is another church practicing generosity beyond measure.
  • Wondering what would happen if all of our churches stopped passing offering plates and just let people give without compulsion or guilt?
  • I have preached in four churches in 5 weeks, each one has done "church" a little different - and each one has seen God work through their efforts - Remember it is not us who will build the church!
  • What would you say are the essential elements of worship when believers gather?
  • While I was not there today, I am thrilled with the announcement at FCC Kissimmee today!
  • Have you been surprised how the media portrayed the Chick-Fil-A appreciation day? I am not, listen the world will never understand Biblical values. That is why we must win the heart, before we can change the mind.
  • Love seeing the commercials for the start of the NFL season.
  • Michael Phelps is a swimming beast!
  • Something to chew on; Nearly eight out ten pastors struggle with critics to the point they admit it’s a distraction from their ministries. ~ Tom Rainer (my question Why do we have so many critics today?)

Press On!

We are 5 days into the Olympic Games; over the last five days we have seen inspiring victories as well heart breaking defeats. Who can forget the tears of Jordyn Wieber as she realized her Olympic dreams were not going to come to true. While the games have provided a fair amount of drama (unless of course you are checking other news sources for winners instead of waiting for NBC to show us the results in Prime Time), I find the stories about the athlete's preparation for the games to be most inspiring story of the games.

Practice, dedication, discipline, determination are all words one can use to describe the efforts of the athletes. It seems the are willing to do whatever it takes to stand on the podium, hear their National Anthem played and be crowned Olympic champion.

While the opportunity to be the best athlete in the world is an amazing feat, the Apostle Paul reminds us we compete for something greater; an imperishable crown. Just as the athlete in the Olympics realizes he or she needs to practice, as well as have steady determination, discipline and dedication, as Christians we too must have these same attributes.

Unfortunately, someone has told us a lie. In our desire to make Christianity appealing to others  we have bought into the idea that Christianity is more of a cosmetic to wear rather than a lifestyle to be practiced. This was a foreign idea in the New Testament. For every where the gospel was preached transformation soon followed.
  • In Acts 2, Generosity was evident as the new believers shared their resources with one another.
  • In Acts 3 & 4, The apostles see the power of God as they heal a lame man and as a result, when they were told to stop sharing about Jesus, they experienced an amazing amount of boldness.
  • In Acts 6, they displayed wisdom as a dispute threatened their unity.
  • In Acts 8, The gospel leaves the city of Jerusalem and moves into Samaria, evangelism becomes a way of life for this new group of believers.
These events happened in the first few chapters of the book of Acts; later we read of people giving up their pagan rituals and habits as the Gospel transformed their lives.

Is it possible to catch that spirit of of transformation in our churches today? The answer is yes. However it will not just happen, like the Olympic athlete we must press on with discipline, determination and dedication. To experience this transformation we need only to look at the words of the Apostle Paul in Philippians 13 -14...
This one thing I do, forgetting what is behind me and straining to for what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Forgetting what is behind us, no regrets about the past. The past cannot be changed and living in our yesterdays only brings regrets. Paul's answer is a simple one - Press on!

  • When the temptation to be cavalier about our relationship with fellow Christians, Press on
  • When the desire to read His word wanes, Press on.
  • When the pull of the world calls us to forsake the assembly of worship, Press on.
  • When the evil one tempts us with subtle, but deadly sins such as gossip, complaining and  mediocrity, Press on.
We may never stand on a podium and receive a medal as our National Anthem is played. However we do have a prize waiting for us. A prize which only God can give us, therefore let us press on!

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with the church at Sun City Center today.
  • Traditional worship done Right! Loved the pipe organ!
  • They have an amazing way of receiving the offering; they do not pass offering plates, they simply place plates in the back of the building and let the people respond.
  • Lesson gleamed from their offering; generous giving comes from a gracious heart not out of guilt or compulsion.
  • One of their leaders really challenged me to use my gift more often!
  • Andy Griffith tribute on TV Land reminds me how much we have lost our innocence.
  • Really excited about a couple of things in the works for the alumni of FCC, I think this is going to be a banner year.
  • If you live in Florida you should really plan on attending the Elders & Leadership Conference this Fall, it is going to be great.
  • Judging by the weather in  London it looks like we are watching the FALL Olympics rather than the SUMMER Olympics
  • The upsets at the Olympics should be a reminder the will to win will always overcome the hype.
  • The first round of students return to FCC Wednesday, summer is almost over
  • NFL Training Camps opened last week; O Happy Day!
  • Watched the Chinese Gymnastic team snub their alternate Saturday night when he did not do so well reminded me why grace is such a  special gift, for the one receiving grace as well as the one extending grace.
  • Are you extending grace to anyone?
  • The Church Curmudgeon makes me smile - often!

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with the Church family at Whitfield Christian Church in Sarasota this morning. Really good people, Dave is doing a great job on the north side of Sarasota!
  • Every time I preach in a different church I receive a blessing from the people who attend that church.
  • Worship today was all guitar, what a great approach.
  • I am really saddened by the news my second ministry is closing her doors after 33 years of impacting Anderson, Indiana for Christ.
  • I am sure they are heartbroken over the decision as well.
  • For a great comment on the Aurora, Colorado incident, please read my friend Mark's blog.
  • When was the last time you were surprised by the actions of others? I was today!
  • Led a tour of Seniors around the campus of Florida Christian College Friday, these seasoned saints had such a great attitude, they are a model of growing up in the Lord.
  • It has been a week since the NACC was in Orlando and I am still pondering Bob Russell's message from Friday morning.

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with the fine folks of  FCC Inverness today.
  • Had the opportunity to do two of my favorite things; Teach and Preach!
  • Taught on the Prodigal Son from Luke 15; asked the question are you more like the loving father or the older brother?
  • Unfortunately too many people are more like the older brother rather than the loving father.
  • You know why so many people relate to the story of the prodigal son? Because one time or another we have all been a prodigal.
  • During the worship time, I had the opportunity to preach from the book of Jonah.
  • The story of Jonah is not a story of a reluctant prophet, but of a loving God who will pursue us, even when we run from Him.
  • Two important verses to note from this morning's message, Jonah 1:1 & Jonah 1:17  In verse 1 the word of the Lord came to Jonah, verse 17 the Lord provided for Jonah. It is amazing to realize the fact Jonah was running from God and yet, God provided a rescue for Jonah.
  • Congratulations to Travis and Taryn, I had an opportunity to officiate at their wedding on Saturday.
  • As much fun as it was to officiate their wedding, I was thankful I had the opportunity to spend some time with Travis' parents. It was truly a God-ordained moment!
  • I enjoy reading tweets from very inspired leaders.
  • The worship at the NACC was incredible, the team did a great job touching the heart as well the head!
  • One of my favorite songs was "Oh How He Loves Us" with the images of wedding as a backdrop.
  • The NACC was both exhausting as well as rewarding.
  • Did I mention we served 40 gallons of ice cream at our alumni reception Thursday evening?
  • The year if half over, how can that be?
  • College Football is just around the corner!
  • Something to chew on... Where you are going and what you are doing is not nearly as important as what you are becoming ~ Mark Batterson (from his twitter account)

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Great message this morning on the exclusive nature of Jesus Christ.
  • Boldness in preaching is essential to bring about life change.
  • Why preach? Consider these verses from the book of Acts.
  • Do you have a conviction to preach Christ or do you have a preference to preach Christ? The difference between the two will determine the amount of boldness you display in your preaching.
  • This morning's worship really set the table for Jim's message - Great job Chris!
  • Tonight was one of those great opportunities that thrills my heart, I witnessed a young man ordained into the ministry, reminded me of my own ordination 31 years ago. Congratulations Stephen!
  • Great tweet from Gene Appel today on the real problem we face today. This should disturb all of us who are called to be a part of the church.
  • To understand the call of ministry, check out this verse from Jeremiah.
  • BTW the ordination service should be a template for all ordinations, Shan and FCC Orlando did a wonderful job.
  • One of the great attributes of a leader is the ability to encourage those who follow him. The last week I have seen this attribute displayed over and over at FCC.
  • Officiating at another wedding for a young man in a former church on Saturday, humbled to be asked and honored he asked me to share in this event!
  • If you are a part of a thriving church, do everything you can to keep the momentum going. If you are a part of a stagnant church, you know how hard it is to recapture momentum.
  • Starting next Sunday, I begin a four week stretch of preaching every Sunday, I can't wait.
  • Looking forward to reconnecting with friends this week at the NACC.
  • First college football game is less than 60 days away!
  • Something to Chew on; There is nothing that makes you more miserable (or less interesting) than self absorption ~ Tim Keller.

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Worshiped with the fine folks at FCC Homosassa Springs this morning.
  • I really miss preaching on a weekly basis.
  • Met a couple of parents of an FCC alumnus, they sure are proud of their daughter and son-in-law.
  • I know I have said it before, but I am so amazed by the friendships I have made as a result of ministry.
  • Going to a funeral of a Christian is always inspiring!
  • Jeff Walling's tweet was dead on today.
  • One of "my youth ministry kids" turned 41 this week, time keeps moving faster and faster.
  • The number 1 need in our churches today is leadership, you can overcome poor facilities and a poor location, but poor leadership is disastrous.
  • Biblical leaders are willing to pay the price to see the church move forward.
  • Something to Chew on; A pessimist makes difficulties of his opportunities and a optimist makes opportunities of his difficulties. ~ Harry Truman

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts From an Amazing Day...

  • Finished up a teaching on Joshua this morning, I hope I am as faithful as this OT Hero.
  • Joshua was a man of faith and a faithful man and one worthy of emulating.
  • You can tell the spirit of the church by watching the worship team on stage, this morning our team revealed both joy and praise.
  • It is day 4 of my daughter's Haiti trip, from the emails we are receiving, it looks like it going to be a life changing experience.
  • Jim preached on Psalm 23:4 this evening, great message on the good shepherd as well as practical lessons on what it means to be an elder/shepherd in the local church today.
  • One reason the church is having such a weak impact on our culture today, is we having given up on the mandate to make disciples.
  • I know it is 3 months away, but the Florida Christian College Elders/Leaders Conference is really shaping up to be a great day of training and encouragement.
  • Getting back into a routine of preaching as I will be preaching in churches around the state for the next 6 weeks. (I am really looking forward to the next 6 weeks)
  • Discovered this tweet yesterday by Thom Rainer; Because the American church is mired in mediocrity, change is often wrought with conflict. Though it is true, I also find it very disturbing.
  • Something to Chew on; You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it. ~ Margaret Thatcher.

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...

  • Had a relief preacher this morning as Jim was away - Adam you did a great job.
  • Great quote from this morning's message; Reading is the way you get through the Bible; prayer is the way you get the Bible through you.
  • So glad I belong to a healthy church family.
  • Here is another quote from today's message; I would rather be able to pray like David than speak with the eloquence of Gabriel.
  • The prayer time at the end of the message was VERY powerful - just saying!
  • Worship team led us in my favorite hymn today - Holy, Holy, Holy. Verse 2 contains one of the most powerful images of worship in Heaven.
  • In case you have not heard, my first grandchild is going to be a girl!
  • I hope the members of FCC Kissimmee appreciate the their ministerial staff, they are top notch!
  • Tip of the hat to Dave H. for the free golf adventure at Disney World last week.
  • Here is a great couple of verses to hang your hat on!

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...

  • Preached at South Daytona Christian Church this morning. Great worship and good people! Bobby Smith is doing a great job leading this congregation.
  • Gotta say I love the "New Bridge" on It is well with my soul! Thanks for the uplifting worship Scott!
  • Once again I have the privilege of officiating the wedding of a former member of my youth ministry this coming weekend - I have said it before, but I really mean it; this never gets old!
  • Speaking of weddings; Congrats to my in-laws, they celebrate 55 years of marriage today way to go Grady and Irma - you two are a model of faithfulness.
  • Great tweet from Craig Groeschel today; check it out here.
  • The more I think about it, the more I realize how important Biblical Elders are to a Healthy Church.
  • Disney raised their prices today, AGAIN! The happiest place on earth may soon be the loneliest place on earth if these price hikes continue.
  • Something to Chew on; Your employers quickly forget the long hours you give them at work. Your children never forget memory-making moments with them. ~ Thom Rainer

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...

  • Said farewell to our worship leader today, Derick and Hyatt you will be missed!
  • Jim did a wonderful job with a difficult subject this morning, I wonder how many people truly "Examine themselves" in order to grow closer to Christ?
  • Quote from last week - God's word must have supremacy in our culture.
  • I have been thinking a lot about the FCC's motto lately; "Strong in the Scriptures" cannot just be a slogan, it has got to be a way of life.
  • Last week I heard a stat regarding the age when people accept Christ, the old stat said 85% choose a faith by age18, the new data reveals 85% are doing so by age14; kind of makes you wonder where we should be putting our time and energy in youth ministry today!
  • When you understand your mission, your priorities become clear.
  • Mixed motives always lead to a disastrous mission.
  • Spent some quality time with the in-laws tonight, always a pleasure.
  • FCC Kissimmee's Bible Bowl teams are getting ready for their summer tournaments - I am impressed with the amount of time these young people are putting in to compete.
  • I admit it, I am missing college football!
  • Something to Chew on; Influencing others is a matter of disposition, not position - you can influence from anywhere in the organization ~ John Maxwell, The 360 Leader.

Sunday Night Reflections

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...

  • Heard a great sermon dealing with life's struggles this evening - great job Dan.
  • After hearing the stat regarding when someone comes to faith today, I think it is time to rethink youth ministry.
  • I wonder how many youth ministers would be willing to change what they are doing in light of tonight's stat?
  • I learned this weekend, the more things change, the more they remain the same. At times that can be comforting, but at other times it is disturbing.
  • This weekend I was listening to Rich Mullins "Songs" CD, I had forgotten how he had such a way with words.
  • I am now on twitter, not for what I have to say, but to hear some of the conversations that are happening especially in leadership and preaching. I find the thoughts to be stimulating at times. If you care to, you can follow me @alantison.
  • I have been thinking about a blog post titled, "Why has The Jerry Springer  Show showed up in our churches? However wisdom is keeping me from ranting at this time.
  • This weekend I realized I blinked.
  • Something to chew on; When we see money as a tool to play with instead of a tool to impact eternity, out vision becomes shortsighted and unfocused. Randy Alcorn, Managing God's Money

The Search Part 2

Last time I posted I was sharing thoughts about how to search for a minister. Needless to say, the responses were a bit overwhelming. I am amazed at the number of hits my blog received from this post (especially since I did not post it on facebook or anyplace else). I guess the search for a minister is a hot topic these days. With that in mind let me close out my thoughts regarding the search with two thoughts.

  1. Confidentiality is a must. The search for a minister is to be held in highest confidence. Search committee members must show discretion in making contact with the perspective minister, as well as checking references. Too often a minister seeks a new opportunity in secret from his present leadership and congregation. I wish this was not so, I have often wondered why we who are children of light, tend to secretly seek out employment opportunities. I guess the human nature in us worries if an opportunity does not work out we may have damaged our present situation. For that reason it is important that confidentiality be observed as conduct the search.
  2. Finally and probably the most important rule of thumb when conducting a search - PRACTICE THE GOLDEN RULE! The Golden Rule, is one of the best-known of Jesus' sayings. If everyone followed this rule and treated other people in the way they'd want to be treated themselves, the search for a minister will be both rewarding and would help establish a healthy relationship with the new minister.
While this is not an exhaustive list it is a good starting place for one who is asked to be a part of a search team. Hopefully it has been helpful.
