- Jim had a fine message on the subject of GRATITUDE.
- Gratitude is not confined to the fourth Thursday in November, Gratitude should be a part of DNA as Christ followers.

- The more life goes on, the more grateful I am for the PEOPLE in my life.

You are my God. Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I am calling on you constantly. Give me happiness, O Lord, for I give myself to you. O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help. Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord; hear my urgent cry. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. ~ Isaiah 40:28-31

Do you miss Preaching?
For the
first 30 years of my professional career I was a preacher. I preached, as
an associate minister once a month for 17 years. Today I am grateful
to the congregations for giving me the opportunity to hone my craft as a
preacher. They were gracious and they may not have realized it at the time, but
they helped me develop my preaching style. For 13 years I preached on
a regular basis as the senior minister in a local
congregation. During that time I learned how to develop my preaching as a
tool to convict the audience (and sometime myself), cast vision and encourage people
through the spoken word.
Recently
I was visiting a church representing the University and I was asked, "Do
you miss preaching?" Before I answer that question, you need to know I
continue to preach about 35 times a year in various settings. Sometimes my
messages focus on the University and how individuals can partner
with us. I also "fill the pulpit" when a minister is on vacation. I
do have ample opportunities to preach. However, the more I thought about
his question; “Do I miss preaching?” The more I thought about preaching, what
do I miss most about preaching?
First, I
miss the weekly interaction of sermon preparation - I know it sounds crazy, but
after 30 years of preparing messages, I still enjoy the AHA moment when I
discovery a new insight in scripture. The Hebrew writer is right speaking of
scripture as the "Living Word". Every time I dig into scripture I
find new nuggets of wisdom that I cannot wait to share. My preaching today is
usually a message that I have preached several times depending on the need of
the congregation as it relates to the university. While there
is preparation involved is not the deep study that comes from
preparing a different message each week.
I also miss
preaching in series. During my 13 years as a preaching minister, I made it a
habit to preach in series or to preach through a particular section of a book.
I miss the opportunity to "unpack" a section of scripture for 4 to 6
weeks and to help the congregation journey through the
whole counsel of God.
Finally,
I miss the opportunity to see and hear about the life change that comes about
from preaching the whole counsel of God. There is something about
being at a local congregation and saying, "Last month we talked about this
issue" or "You remember we looked at Paul's writings in..."
As I travel from church to church most of my messages are “stand alone”
messages, thus I seldom know the impact of a one shot message. I envy the men
who stand in the pulpit each week and develop a relationship with their congregation through
the preaching of the Word.
Do I miss
preaching? I miss some aspects of preaching, however, I am content to be faithful
in the place God is calling me.

- Adding Roland to the staff gives the church one more opportunity to reach a culture for Christ.
- BTW, Jim's message on the authority of scripture should give every believer hope!
- While today was a wonderful day of worship at FCC Kissimmee, I am reminded, there are other churches struggling with their identity, mission and purpose. For that reason I ask, "Are you praying for your minister?"

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...
- Preached at Ocala Christian Church this morning.
- Invitation and Prayer time was truly amazing - people truly respond when people pray for them.
- I did not know one song in today's worship time, yet it was evident the people were connecting to God.
- Question; do you have to know the songs in order to worship?
- Work day at JUFL yesterday, and you guessed it, I cut my hand on the last job of the day!
- It is hard to type with your index finger is bandaged up.
- Actually the injury is not bad, it just in a bad spot on; the tip of my index finger.
- The campus really looks great - we are ready for our students to return and for our new students to be a part of the JUFL community.
- I really enjoy being a part of a small group. I cannot tell you how much this group means to me. Spiritual Growth + Laughter + Accountability = doing life together! If you are not in a small group why not?
- Are you ready for some football? Oh so close!
- Facetime with Savannah Grace today - what a joy!
- Something to Chew on: He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon" ~ Jesus in Revelation 22:20

- Next week the month of August begins - stay calm, the year is flying by.

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...
- Preached at Englewood Christian Church, Jacksonville this morning.
- Great time seeing many old friends.
- Thank you Nathan and the team for leading us in worship this morning. Very inspiring.
- One key thought from today's message is how God is always waiting for sinners to come home!
- Indeed God is patient, but we we never presume his patience will last forever.
- I don't think good sound teams get enough credit - they are only noticed when things go wrong. No problems today - fantastic sound team - Thank you!
- Another wedding this past weekend - I love seeing the expression on the grooms's face when he sees his bride come down the aisle.
- Football is getting closer!
- This summer I have traveled over 2100 miles for JUFL - lots of time looking through a windshield!
- How can it rain cats and dogs just 3 miles from my house and yet we not get a drop of rain at our home - Must be Florida!
- Another cancer treatment tomorrow - praying for the strongest woman I know!
- Over 200 kids provided numerous hours of service at JUFL Thursday - we really appreciated their help!
- Something to Chew on; “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.” ~ Micah 7:18-19

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...
- Preached at South Daytona Christian Church today.
- The church has a great focus on prayer.
- There are churches that pray and then there are praying churches - SDCC is a praying church!
- Preached on Luke 15 today, the parable of the prodigal son, but I think we have it wrong, it really should be called the Parable of the Loving Father.
- Heard a rousing version of the Star Spangled Banner this morning - I know it is a difficult song to sing but when it is done right - Wow - BTW it was done right today!
- This is the last month without football - yes it is getting close to the most wonderful time of the year!

- Did I tell you how much I hate cancer?
- Savannah Grace always makes me smile!
- Why can't other fast-food joints hire people like Chick-Fil-A? This has always been a mystery to me.
- Watched a couple of episodes to the Twilight Zone marathon this past weekend, Rod Sterling was ahead of his time.

Sunday Night Reflections
A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...
- Preached at Salt Springs Christian Church this morning. Great group of people.
- Today's message focused on the Father Heart of God.
- We can take a great deal of comfort in realizing we have a God who waits for sinners to repent!
- Here is another comforting thought from the message, to have a Father Heart like God, one needs know special talent, abundance resources or talent, just a willingness to love as God loved.
- The Salt Springs church has a real live choir - yes a choir!
- As of Tuesday, half of the year is over - wow, soon it will be Christmas!
- Great week at the NACC in Cincinnati, If you attend the convention you know many people leave early Friday morning and miss the final session, I am glad I was there to hear two challenging messages.
- The final message was spot on considering the events in Washington Friday.
- #1 lesson I learned from the NACC this past week was not found in a sermon nor a workshop, but in the variety of ministries represented; the Kingdom of God is ever expanding.
- Here is a great message from one of the most respected leaders in our brotherhood - Don't Lose Heart!
- Some airlines think they are in the "Flight" business, when actually they are in the people business. Remember, no people no flights; it is not that difficult to understand.
- Tomorrow the ordeal begins once again, please pray for my wife ~ Cancer stinks!
- I think I am ready for a FACEBOOK fast!
- I wonder what it would be like to live in Montana? I am not moving there, I am just curious what it would be like to live in Montana.
- Had a great visit with a good friend in ministry this past week, our annual visit is a great time to catch up. It truly is amazing we have stayed close for a number of years, with so little personal contact.
- Finished another novel this week, my reading habits are really changing. Thanks Dave and Linda.
- Something to Chew on; Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing. ~ Abraham Lincoln

- Heard at a funeral yesterday, During WWII men saw the worst this world had to offer, but men who died in the Lord now see the best God has to offer!
- Seen on Facebook tonight; Research reveals that on average the majority of Christians spend more money at the movies than they give back to God each week.#JurrassicMistake #WorshipTheWronggod Ouch!
- Seeing adults who were once kids in my youth ministries makes me feel nostalgic - hope I made a difference in their lives!
- In case you forget, I hate cancer!

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...
- What a great privilege as I was invited to speak at Englewood Christian Church this morning in Jacksonville.
- As I looked over the audience I saw so many people who had an influence in my life. So thankful for a church who invests in people.
- Today's message focused on the importance of the trustworthiness of the word of God.
- Thank you Michael C. for singing "Ancient Words" prior to the message.
- In a world filled with so much uncertainty it is comforting to know we have a firm foundation in the word of God.
- Key point from this morning's message; we are not saved because we read the Bible, we are saved by believing in the One revealed in the Bible.
- Today's comments on FB regarding this morning have been such an encouragement.
- 5 months down 7 to go! This year is flying by fast. It seems like yesterday we were worried about Y2K.
- Received a preliminary good report on Kathy's test Wednesday - hopefully the good news will be confirmed this week.

A Few Thoughts from an Amazing Day...
- Returned to Connected Life Christian Church in Boca Raton again today. Great people, they are really trying to do everything possible to reach people for Christ.
- Today's message focused on Becoming People of the Second Chance. Drawing lessons from the father's actions in the parable of the Prodigal son.
- If you could have one; What would you like a second chance to do?
- I am always amazed how the father was willing to welcome his son back home - no conditions, no probationary period, simply a welcomed embrace and a celebratory banquet.
- When it comes to giving people a second chance are you like the father in this parable?
- Wonderful lunch with one of the church leaders of CLCC - there is nothing like the sweet fellowship believers have with one another. We have known each other for 8 days and yet our common bond in Christ, gave us an instant friendship.
- The church said farewell to a member of the congregation who had attended the church since 1972, what a great example of faithfulness.
- My daughter traveled with me this week, She thinks I am her favorite preacher.
- Once again we are reminded of sins devastation in the lives of people. So glad we are not bound by law!
- We can ALL take comfort in this verse.
- Had a great time with my family at Jonathan and Megan's house this weekend - Pure joy!
- My son David can really cook a hamburger!

- Good Friends have sold their home - so many good memories in that home - Oh if those wall could talk!
- I thought the speed limit on the Turnpike was 70 mph - silly me, as passed like I was standing still - I vote to rename the Turnpike to Florida Speedway.
- Tomorrow is a holiday, gonna try to sleep in til 7!
- Next week I head to Jax, to preach at one of my favorite churches - I'm pumped!
- Something to Chew on: “God uses broken things. It takes broken soil to produce a crop, broken clouds to give rain, broken grain to give bread, broken bread to give strength. It is the broken alabaster box that gives forth perfume. It is Peter, weeping bitterly, who returns to greater power than ever.” ~ Vance Havner

- Things I saw on the turnpike today - 1 dead alligator, 1 live boar, 1,000 tourists - does anyone live up north anymore?
- Saturday was one of the most stressful days I have experienced in a long time, I can't imagine how tough it has been for Chris and Maggie!

- Nothing is more difficult for a minister than to preach a child's funeral.
- Could we have a triple crown winner this year?
- I miss seeing Space Shuttle launches.
- No students at JUFL + no noise in the halls of JUFL = I really miss the students this summer.
- Something to Chew on; “If you partner with God, Make your plans big!” I encourage you today to make God your partner. Whatever your burden is that caused you to search for strength, give it up to him now. Do not let another minute go by without completely surrendering your burdens to Him. God wants to be your strength. Surrender to Him in your weakness and let Him show Himself strong. Remember if God brings you to it, He will bring you through it! ~ D.L. Moody

Sunday Night Reflections
In honor of Mother's Day I came across this illustration I have used when preaching on Mother's Day. I thought would be good to share. It is not original with me.
To all the Mean Moms of the world-and if you
aren’t mean-it’s never too late to start being a mean mom. Was your Mom mean? I know mine
was :-) We had the meanest mother in the whole world! While other kids ate
candy for breakfast, we had to have cereal, eggs, and toast. When others had a
Pepsi and a Twinkie for lunch, we had to eat sandwiches. And you can guess our
mother fixed us a dinner that was different from what other kids had, too.
Mother
insisted on knowing where we were at all times. You’d think we were convicts in
a prison. She had to know who our friends were, and what we were doing with
them.
She
insisted if we said we would be gone for an hour, we would be gone for an
hour or less.
We
were ashamed to admit it, but she had the nerve to break the Child Labor Laws
by making us work. We had to wash the dishes, make the beds, learn to cook,
vacuum the floor, do laundry, and all sorts of cruel jobs. I think she would
lie awake at night thinking of more things for us to do.
She
always insisted on us telling the truth the whole truth, and nothing but the
truth.
By the time we were teenagers, she could read our minds. Then, life was really tough!
Mother would not let our friends just honk the horn when they drove up. They had to come up to the door so she could meet them. While everyone else could date when they were 12 or 13, we had to wait until we were 16. Because of our mother we missed out on lots of things other kids experienced.
None of us have ever been caught shoplifting, vandalizing other’s property or ever arrested for any crime. It was all her fault. We never got drunk, took up smoking, stayed out all night, or a million other things other kids did. Now that we have left home, we are all God-fearing, educated, honest adults. We are doing our best to be mean parents just like Mom was. I think that is what’s wrong with the world today. It just doesn't have enough mean moms anymore.
